What is big M management?
It’s an attitude, a commitment, a call to take it to the next level in managing and leading in these extraordinary times.
The big M mission
…to create a community of professionals committed to being powerful, strong, courageous, effective managers
…to generate innovative and bold thinking that translates into effective strategies and best practices
…to help leaders work smart, accelerate competency via “ease of use” learning with & through others, increase earning potential and employability
…offering a variety of sources for support in this endeavor
How? – The 3 “Cs”
- Community
- Discussion board
- Submit your own – best practices and articles
- Coaching / advice
- Best practices – mgt. roundtable, learning forums
- Individual coaching
- Continuous learning/development
- Just in time learning via the management-in –minutes learning library database.
So what’s small “m” management?…managers and management who..
- Are parental, enabling, controlling, bullying
- Employs no employee development
- Has under trained staff at every level
- Periodic, incohesive training vs. ongoing cohesive
- Passive self training – doesn’t take personal responsibility to develop competencies and needed knowledge
- Tolerance of abusive managers in their organization
- Toleration of toxic employees, unhealthy, unproductive employees
- Fearful – lacks courage
- Unmanaged ego…
-need to be right
-low anger threshold
-externalize their problems by blaming others
-lack empathy
-unproductive need to control
-difficulty admitting fault
-emotionally immature
-insecure
-In authentic
-undeveloped as a person - Has a disconnect in the understanding of how employee training and development impacts the bottom line by enhancing competitiveness and company growth.
And I’m sure you can add to this list…
So what’s big M management? …it is managers who…
- Actively managing their careers
- Work harder on themselves than their team members
- Commits to high levels of competencies
- Are active learners
- Commitment to personal and professional growth
- Willing and able to evolve as the needs of the market requires
- Relationships are collaborative…see team members as partners vs. being above them
- Able to build healthy, respectful relationships with team members
- Creates respectful boundaries with all stakeholders
- Understands the difference between being tough vs. being abusive
- Attitude of “buck stops with me first”
- Leads from the inside out
- Understands the need for increased knowledge in a diverse workforce
- Able to lead individuals and teams for productively
- Building a relevant knowledge base to serve as an internal consultant to colleagues and direct reports.
I am committed to promote to the best of my ability big M management and provide the recourses and knowledge to do so and I invite you to partner with me in that. I can’t do it alone. THIS will take collective community effort.
