Career Management – Needed Now More Than Ever

More than ever, career management is needed. With economic uncertainty blanketing the global economy and a fundamental restructuring of our financial systems taking place, it’s essential that managing your career take center stage. At activity once taken for granted or done sporadically at best, now must become a lifestyle habit.
What do I mean by a “lifestyle habit”? A lifestyle habit is something that you do on a regular basis. Just like you balance your checkbook as a habit of financial management, (or at least some of us do) there should be consistent action on a regular basis to manage your career.
So, what consistent action should be taken? Here’s what I consider to be the foundational actions:
1. Keep a working resume: a working resume is one that is reviewed and updated periodically – at least quarterly. Your resume should be updated with:
a. any new projects engaged in that could be considered a highlight or accomplishment
b. statements reflecting your job description (because job descriptions are so fluid these days)
c. any quantitative numbers regarding an accomplishment. For example, a manager could state that 98% retention of a team was achieved in fiscal year 2008 or team productivity rose 3%.
d. any professional development or training workshops attended
e. any new technical skills acquired, such as a software program
Since our work lives are so busy and it’s challenging to remember the particulars of activities, the habit of periodic update is incredibly important.
